Like every year in December Monarch Berlin happily bring a special edition featuring several artists who have played YDRKM before to celebrate the coming of a new year. This is for all of you staying home for the holidays or those just about to leave right before.

Like Arca’s music, songs tend to change shape as they progress, never repeating themselves structurally, but often drawing on the same sounds and textures recurrently. I find that this style of electronic music breathes life into songs, making them feel almost organic, as if they’re sentient and self-determining. Lotic’s music moves in patterns that can seem unfamiliar when compared to conventional electronic music, giving his songs an almost alien or insect-like quality. Personally, I’m obsessing over this style of electronic music right now, and it seems to be gaining traction in the mainstream as well. Lotic has attracted the attention of Bjork, who recently collaborated with similar artists on her latest full-length and included Lotic’s remix of her track “NotGet” on a Rinse FM broadcast.

She is a member of NYC label and collective Purple Tape Pedigree – alongside label-boss Geng, Celestial Trax, Gila, Kieran Loftus, and Copout – whose mold-melting output is woven with the same thread as her own. Her sound touches on a variety of club genres, bottling the dark components of jersey, grime, techno, baile, and ballroom with a generous topping of rap and R&B. She sandwiches sweet lullabies and anthemic lyrics with unsettling beats and unconventional musical backdrops, uniting noir and twisted emotions with frenetic percussion and beatless moments of grandeur.

After spending years intentionally on the fringes of experimental dance music, 2015 saw Lee embracing the conventional release format for the very first time, accordingly establishing himself as a formidable emergent voice in dance music’s larger conversation.
Once a month Monarch invites a producer, artist or DJ residing in Berlin to play music he/she would usually not play in a club: music that informs the roots of their styles, obscure songs they love, guilty pleasures, analogue or digital, danceable or not.
