Berlin is rich with local electronic music producers and DJs. Privately though not all of them are exclusively listening to electronic music or the kind of music they make themselves. So what else is inspiring them?
Once a month Monarch Berlin invites a producer, artist or DJ to play music he/she would usually not play in a club: music that informs the roots of their styles, obscure songs they love, guilty pleasures, analogue or digital, danceable or not.
With the discography of an established artist, it would be fair to assume that Timur Tokdemir aka Mechatok is a seasoned veteran of the dance music world, but at 18, the half-Tunisian, half-Turkish artist is a fairly new player on the German scene.
A classical trained guitarist, Mechatok’s sound balances an ingrained sense of melody with an inclination towards the rougher sides of the dance music spectrum. This is apparent in his mix works for The Astral Plane and Tank Magazine — efforts that blend southern rap music, lo-fi house edits, gqom and dancehall on top of his own harp and hymn-focused instrumentals. Tracks like U.D.G., D.U.C.T. and Nite Dew are all nearly beat free melodic jams, featuring harmonically complex arrangements that despite a lush demeanour is in touch with Tokdemir’s more percussive and floor-oriented work.

It’s rare for a young artist to have developed a sound that is so distinctly his own. With a progressive development highly anticipated and a recent relocation to Berlin, it’s fair to assume that we’ll be hearing a lot more of Mechatok through Europe and beyond.
This event is presented by Digital in Berlin. Check out our Facebook page to win tickets.
